Goshukus

Goshukus (Karate Camps)

We at S A Gorei Karate run between four and five camps a year. Two are major Goshukus with both the senior and junior grades attending together and from all ages. Then there are Two Pee Wee Goshukus, for children, ten years and younger. The camps are always run from Sunday late afternoon until Friday after lunch. The fifth camp is for specific grade groups, such as those going for brown belt.

I have been running camps since 1971, although in those days it was only two per year. The camps are always the first week of the school holidays with the two major camps being the middle of the school year and at the end of the school year. The groups are always split per age and grade for basic and kata. and again for kumite, randori and self-defense training.

Example of Goshuku classes

First class 5.30 to 7.30 (with outside visitors joining)

  • Loosen up and standing basic for 1 hour
  • Kata for 20 minutes
  • Ju-Ippon or Ippon kumite for 30 minutes
  • Aerobic exercises to end the class.

Second class: 9.30 to 11.30 (only those on the camp)

  • Loosen up and stepping basic for 30 minutes.
  • Kata and Bunkai (application of kata) for 1hour 15 minutes
  • Randori / Kumite and end the class.

Third class: for 105 minutes:

  • One weapon, (basic, kata and kumite) for 1 hour
  • 15 minutes of free weapons training (kata or kumite)
  • 15 minutes of competitive Kumite or Randori and end the class.

Fourth class; 7.00 to 8.45 (small junior grade children don’t do this class)

(The Dojo’s adult students join this class)

This is normally a recap of the whole day’s classes. The idea is for the children to make sure that what was covered that day is practiced, but this time with the adults students.

Each day the classes are the same design but increase in stranded. For example on day one we only do the first three and sixth kata, on day two we repeat those katas and add in number four and number seven. Also on day one for weapons we will do only Bo and on day two we will do Bo and Tonfa and on day three we will do those two weapons as well as Sai. On day four, we will do those three weapons as well as Nunchakas.

Every day we do activities with the children, for example going to the museums, movies, ice-skating, ten pin bowling etc or even going to the beach for a picnic.

We always end the week with a grading except for the black belts who have to grade at a formal grading.

There is always a minimum of three of us instrucrer so it is easy to split the groups up where necessary.
